The traditions in your kitchen belong in the story, too

WOC — THE NETWORK · October 31, 2026

Verified event/resource context with original WOC reflection. Teaching companions are WOC editorial material prepared for the Dr. Cole and Ms. Jordan experiences.

The Library of Congress describes Alive in Many Hands, its American Folklife Center anniversary exhibition, as currently open in the Jefferson Building’s Southwest Gallery. The institution also identifies an online exhibition for people who cannot visit in person. This is a current resource spotlight, not a new opening announcement.

Our Network reflection: traditions survive through people doing things together. Someone measures by feel, teaches a song, sets a table or explains why a familiar celebration matters. Writing down only the instructions can miss the person who gave the practice its meaning.

Choose one willing adult and one small tradition. Ask what it means to them, how they learned it and what they hope another person will carry forward. Request permission before recording, photographing or sharing. Keeping a story within the family is a valid choice.

Dr. T.T. Cole · Teacher preparation

Teacher preparation: read Psalm 78:4–7 and discuss its emphasis on passing knowledge onward. Keep that biblical purpose distinct from the Library’s cultural documentation work. Model an interview with a fictional example; separate the speaker’s memory, the interviewer’s inference and facts requiring confirmation.

Ms. Jordan · Book → Lesson → Real Life

A fifteen-minute activity: write three respectful questions about a familiar tradition. Pair up using real or invented examples, and practice asking permission before taking notes. Finish with one sentence about what you learned and one question you would still need to check. Nobody is required to share a personal history.

Gather around this

Invite a willing storyteller to choose one tradition and decide what, if anything, the group may preserve or share.
