Ming Smith’s photographs invite us to look longer at Black life

Artwork: Original AI-assisted editorial illustration created for The Network. Conceptual imagery, not a photograph of the people or event reported.

At the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, Connecticut, Ming Smith’s photographs bring movement, music and Black experience into the same frame. Jazz Requiem – Notations in Blue spans work from the 1970s to the present, including photographs the museum says are being printed for the first time.

The exhibition is already open: its listed run is August 29, 2026, through January 17, 2027. An opening celebration is scheduled for October 11 from 1–4 p.m., with remarks at 1:30 p.m. The museum lists $5 admission for that celebration.

Our take: This is a chance to make a Black woman’s way of seeing the reason for an outing. Looking closely together can be the beginning of a conversation about whose images we preserve—and whose perspective we trust.

Confirm event arrangements directly with the museum before visiting.
